POW POW | Offscreen
With Pow Wow, Robinson Devor takes us to the desert valley of Coachella in California. Sean Kirby’s camera alternates between weathered faces and untouched landscapes—or landscapes marked by generations of pioneers.
We discover an entire world of domination, of hidden and overt stories, which, against the backdrop of a scandalous irrigation system, sketch out the ongoing exploitation of both the land and its people. It’s a direct, subtle, and elegant portrayal that takes its time to unfold, carefully pacing the narrative all the way to its chilling final scenes, confronting us with a striking case of cultural and territorial appropriation.
Screenings: 10/5 & 23/5.
