Hated: GG Allin and the Murder Junkies
Todd Philips, US, 1993, 90'
When the shit hits the fan(s): a scary shockumentary about controversial punk rock performer GG Allin.
“My mind’s a machine gun, my body’s the bullets, and the audience is the target.” Is only one of the statements by shock-rocker GG Allin in this documentary by NYU film student Todd Phillips, who would later make it as Hollywood director thanks to comedies, such as Road Trip and The Hangover. There is not much reason to laugh (or maybe there is) at the sight of recordings of Allin’s controversial stage performances that leave little to the imagination.
The frontman of The Murder Junkies self-harms with broken beer bottles, eats his own shit and molests the public. In the 14 years that he stomped around on stage, he was convicted more than ten times. Hated is a fitting testament to this punk rocker, body art performer and latter-day ‘asshole’, who died of an overdose not long after shooting the film in June 1993.
