An American anthropologist forays into the inhospitable Amazon forest in search of a missing film crew which disappeared a year earlier while shooting a documentary about supposed cannibal tribes. Following the tracks of this expedition, he finds several reels containing footage that defies belief… During the 70’s and 80’s, the Italian genre film industry produced large quantities of low-budget exploitation movies showing South American jungle people indulging in ritual slaughter and cannibalism. Cannibal Holocaust – Ruggero Deodato’s masterpiece – stands out from the bunch thanks to its original faux documentary formula and its underlying criticism of colonialism and imperialism. Censored in more than 50 countries due to the explicit nature of its scenes, this modern film classic continues to shock and disgust thirty years after its release.
