ELSE - SECOND SCREENING
Anx and Cass are a mismatched couple, trapped in his flat by a virus that makes infected humans merge physically with their surroundings. Will their frail emotional bond be enough to fend off the interior decor threatening to engulf them? What begins as body horror creeps into unexpectedly transcendental territory.
In the presence of director Thibaut Emin and the film crew.
SOLVENT
After Masking Threshold and Razzennest, the third film in Grenzfurthner's found footage trilogy follows an American expat hunting for Nazi papers under an Austrian farmhouse. Of course he finds more than he bargained for! A witty supernatural chiller that uses gross-out body horror to dig deep into a nation's psyche.
In the presence of director Johannes Grenzfurthner.
ODDITY
A psychiatrist insists it was one of his ex-patients who killed his wife in this supernatural murder mystery, but the dead woman's twin sister, a blind clairvoyant, is not so sure. So she moves into the murder scene, an old house undergoing renovation, to seek out the truth - with the help of her freaky wooden doll!
THE LAST SACRIFICE
Rupert Russell's documentary traces the folk horror boom back to an unsolved ritual murder in 1945. The case exposed the dark side of the British psyche and sparked an interest in occultism which reached its zenith in the 1970s, illustrated by clips from The Wicker Man and other folk horrors showing at this year's Offscreen.
In the presence of director Rupert Russell.
REFLET DANS UN DIAMANT MORT
After deconstructing and reinventing the giallo and spaghetti crime subgenres, Cattet and Forzani home in on the eurospy thrillers of the 1960s. Italian genre legend Fabio Testi plays an ex-agent enjoying his retirement in a luxury Côte d'Azur hotel - until his neighbour vanishes. Have his old enemies resurfaced?
In the presence of the directors and part of the cast and crew.
SANATORIUM UNDER THE SIGN OF THE HOURGLASS + COBBLER'S LOT (SHORT)
Josef's visit to his father in a time-warped sanatorium is evoked in a bewitching blend of stop-motion and live action. Images on dead retinas, knee eroticism and bird masks are just some of the elements in the Quay brothers' latest film, which like their Street of Crocodiles is adapted from a book by Bruno Schulz.
TRANSCENDING DIMENSIONS
A sorceror, a hitman and a monk engage in a magic battle that takes us from the mountains of Japan to the farthest reaches of the universe via all kinds of surreal non sequiturs and psychedelic detours. But don't worry about getting a handle on the plot - just relax and enjoy this exhilarating mindfuck of a movie.
BODY ODYSSEY
Senior bodybuilder Mona preps for a Miss Universe contest at a deluxe hotel, her muscle maintenance and steroid intake micromanaged by her trainer (the late Julian Sands). But an encounter in the sauna threatens to disrupt her routine in this mesmerising dive into the magical realist underbelly of human morphology.
TIMESTALKER
Each time Agnes is reincarnated in a different historical period she falls for the same man, similarly reincarnated, before meeting a gory death. With its mad wigs and dildo gags, Lowe's anarchic anti-romcom may look like wacky comedy, but it's also a sly subversion of society's fixation on finding a perfect soulmate.
In the presence of Alice Lowe.
ARCADIA
A couple drives to a remote coastal village to identify the corpse of an accident victim in this eerie but poignant ghost story about memory and loss, from the Greek Weird Wave. The phantoms, both physical and metaphysical, are bound by arcane laws of the afterlife, such as being unable to take off their shoes.
INFINITE SUMMER
Mia doesn't know what to do with herself after high school, but plans to work it out on a lakeside chalet holiday. But her Mean Girl besties and a mind-bending new drug throw her off course. Llansó deftly weaves peer pressure, the generation gap and transhumanism into a droll, dreamlike coming-of-age sci-fi yarn.
In the presence of director Miguel Llansó.
A DESERT
A has-been photographer, seeking inspiration in the desert, makes the mistake of complaining about a noisy couple in the motel room next door. This thriller swerves between various genres, all of them nightmarish, in its exploration of the decayed buildings and liminal landscapes of an America at its most menacing.
VULCANIZADORA + MOUNTAIN OF DISBELIEF (SHORT)
Derek and Martin, two middle-aged losers, lament their pathetic lives as they ramble through a Michigan wood. So far, so mumblecore. But the juvenile antics and aimlessness mask a violent agenda, and a shocking turn of events flips the film into full-on tragicomedy. From the director of Relaxer, who also plays Derek.
+ short film Mountain of Disbelief - world premiere!
Gregory Grosjean, BE, 2025, digital, VO ENG, 19 min
ANIMALIA PARADOXA
An amphibian-like humanoid scavenges among post-apocalyptic ruins, and dreams of an ocean that may no longer exist. This experimental blend of stop-motion animation, puppetry and live-action interpretive dance, directed by the producer of The Wolf House, taps into an early Lynch vibe to agreeably nightmarish effect.
