MASTERCLASS: E. ELIAS MERHIGE | Offscreen
After graduating, American filmmaker E. Elias Merhige (°1964, Brooklyn) started working in the New York theatre scene. In 1989 he made his feature film debut with Begotten which established him as a visionary artist concerned with myth, ritual and the cosmic. With Shadow of the Vampire (2000), starring John Malkovich and Willem Dafoe, and Subject Zero (2004) he also reached a mainstream film audience. The epic film trilogy that began with Begotten was continued with a foray into cosmic psychedelia, Din of Celestial Birds, and completed in 2021 with the sci-fi opera Polia and Blastema. On Sunday March 26, Merhige will for the first time present the three films as one cosmic trinity, especially adapted for a screening at the dome of the Brussels Planetarium, but you can also join the esteemed director on Saturday March 25 at Cinema Nova for a masterclass in which he will explore his body of work, artistic vision and future projects in conversation with film writer Elena Lazic (Animus Magazine, Cineuropa).
Free admission, in English.
