The counter-culture of the late sixties made “El Topo” into one of the first cult hits in the midnight screening circuit. Sergio Leone's “A Fistful of Dollars” meets “Freaks” in this surreal western. A gunslinger all dressed in black departs on a quest for spiritual enlightment. The viewer is taken on a fantasmagorical journey filled with blood-soaked violence, religious symbolism and demented characters. One of its original taglines summed it up perfectly: “What it all means isn’t exactly clear, but you won’t forget it.”
