Star Wars Rip-Offs | Offscreen
The release of "The Force Awakens" reinforced the status of George Lucas' space opera as the most succesful film franchise ever to play the theatres. The 1977 release of the saga's first film was already a massive hit and led to a whole series of rip-offs and spoofs. Filmmakers working in the Italian B-movie industry were eager to share in the huge commercial success of the science-fiction blockbuster. In the Cinecittà studios, Luigi Cozzi made an unintentionally hilarious, kitchy and outrageous space adventure with Caroline Munro, Joe Spinell and a young David Hasselhoff: a true cult classic. Meanwhile, American low budget producer Roger Corman jumped on the bandwagon by dressing up "The Seven Samurai" - or "The Magnificent Seven" as you will - in a Star Wars costume.
Battle Beyond the Stars
Roger Corman's attempt to cash in on the success of "Star Wars" tells of a young man who seeks mercenaries to save his home planet from an invasion by the intergalactic dictator Sador and his space armada.
