SCANDINAVIAN SINS | Offscreen
Sweden may be the pioneer of portraying nudity on the big screen, Denmark followed closely behind Sweden but always went a step further. By abolishing all censorship in 1969 before their Swedish neighbors, Denmark opened the door wide to all kinds of indecency on local movie screens, not safely contained in a separate sex film circuit, hidden away from the curious eyes of growing teenagers, but in first-class cinemas. on the main streets of their cities.
The country that later produced master provocateur Lars von Trier and the Dogma films went on the mainstream tour more than in other countries, and for years, a number of successful sex film series were released in theaters, such as the so-called "Bedside" films, extremely popular Jerry Lewis-like comedies but with bare breasts and buttocks. Another film company, Happy Film, wanted to cash in on this success and stole their main actor and comedian Ole Søltoft and copied the formula, but with more explicit sex. Six films in the Zodiac series were made, each thematically structured around a separate constellation. In the Sign of The Virgin was the first in the series. We show this on an original American 35mm copy with the alternative title Danish Pastries, without the few minutes of hardcore shots, but with enough variety and suggestiveness to make the average head spin or how about kinky lesbian sex, female pubic hair removal , wild catfights and a beautifully depicted steamy underwater orgy?
In addition to these series, Denmark produced and exported an enormous amount of highly sexual material in those years and did not hesitate to record all kinds of obscenities and smut on film, of which the film The Sinful Dwarf is one of the more scandalous highs or lows. An example of extremely bad taste, this is and remains a fascinatingly decadent product of a short era where, so to speak, anything could and should be shown in the cinema. Seen here in a newly restored and uncensored international version.
THE SINFUL DWARF
Pint-sized Olaf uses a clockwork poodle to lure young women into his attic, where he shoots them full of heroin and pimps them out. Meanwhile, his gin-sozzled mother performs several demented cabaret numbers. This depraved slice of "dwarfsploitation" merits a place in the sleaze pantheon alongside Pink Flamingos.
IN THE SIGN OF THE VIRGIN
Two men are sent to the town of Petit-Bois, one to curb the lusts of delinquent boarding-school girls, the other to test-drive a new aphrodisiac. Chaos ensues. The first entry in the “Zodiac” series of six Danish sex films features kinky lesbian capers, no-holds-barred catfights, glittery dancing and an underwater orgy!
