RINGO LAM / JCVD | Offscreen
Last year, we had to say goodbye to one of the best action movie directors from Hong Kong: Ringo Lam. He acquired international fame thanks to “City on Fire”, the movie that inspired Tarantino's “Reservoir Dogs”. Like with many other Hong Kong directors (such as John Woo and Tsui Hark), it's our own Jean-Claude Van Damme who opened the doors to Hollywood (JCVD's good taste when it comes to directors can not be highlighted enough, and this is often where he's ahead of his time). Lam and Van Damme worked together on three movies: “Maximum Risk”, “Replicant” and “In Hell”. With “Maximum Risk” and Replicant”, you get to see as many as four JCVDs, since he plays two different parts in each film. The first is a rather classic crime movie taking place at the Côte d'Azur; the second fits in the list of science fiction box office successes (such as “Universal Soldier” en “Timecop”).
